The density meter - a new approach to measuring brix

A possible alternative to the hydrometer for measuring brix is presented. The technique makes use of a precision density meter which is based on the vibration of a fIxed volume of sample contained in a U-tube, at a given temperature. The period of vibration varies according to the density (brix), and tests indicated good agreement between the results obtained by the density meter and conventional densimetric methods. A major advantage is that the technique permits measurements to be made on samples flowing through the cell, which makes the instrument very attractive for automation.
