The hardware and software features of a hierarchial scheme that controlled the Fairymead extraction plant in 1983 were described by Maclean and Swindells (1984). In this scheme, a Series/1 mini-computer was used as the central co-ordinating host for intelligent distributed satellite programmable controllers. In 1984, the next stage of development was carried out, whereby the communications, logging and supervisory functions were transferred from the mini-computer to an Intel micro-computer and two data loggers were added to the system. This paper describes the general facilities offered by the new system, together with the planned expansion pathway at Fairymead. As well, attention is focussed on aspects of the client-contractor relationship.
