Wheel diameter requirements for canefield railways

By

In spite of extensive interest around the world in the phenomena that control the mechanics of elastic/plastic bodies rolling in contact, no comprehensive text book or report that deals with these mechanics and their engineering application seems to be available. Perhaps it is because of this continuing research and development activity that no definitive text has emerged. Therefore a literature survey and overview of rolling contact mechanics likely to be of use in the study of wheel/rail contact in railway engineering applications was carried out as part of a project to investigate the feasibility of a much larger, four-wheeled wagon for use on the canefield railways but these studies also lead to some insights about wheel sizes of current rolling stock.
