Cane bin wheelset reclamation at Mossman Central Mill
By Ramsay, DF; Barker, RK
Reclaiming cane railway wheelsets has been attempted by various mills with limited success, mainly because of cracking of spoked wheels caused by improper heat treatment, incorrect toughness of the finished build-up layer or lack of economy of the operation caused by procedures for reclaiming that took far too long. Three year ago the Lincoln Electric Company and Queensland Railways developed a submerged arc welding wire/flux combination for reclaiming wheelsets that produces a weld deposit slightly softer than rails. In August 1983 Mossman Central Mill decided to do the same.
