The core-press system of sugar cane quality determination

A system of direct cane sampling and analysis is described. Cane consignments are sampled at the receival station by a core sampler independently of the yarding and milling operations. Composite samples are analysed by the press method for fibre, Brix and pol. Recoverable sugar in cane is calculated by an R.C.S. formula which is structured on the basis of the analytical results by the press method and the industry's current milling efficiency. The R.C.S. and the C.C.S. values, from the same analytical results, are compared with the actual sugar recoveries over a 5-year period. The relative advantages of the system are discussed.
