The application of high torque-low speed hydraulic motors in the sugar industry

Throughout the history of the Australian sugar industry the engineering of motive power has always raised considerable interest and discussion. The application of hydraulic power has been utilised for a long time. However, it is only in recent years that modern technology has produced heavy duty industrial high torque-low speed hydraulic motors that have direct drive applications up to 160 000 Nm continuous torque, and these have considerable potential in sugar mill applications. This paper describes the general features of the high torque-low speed hydraulic motor together with several examples of applications in a sugar mill.
