In a study of a cost reduction program at Pioneer Mill, the cane receivals section of the plant showed the greatest potential to reduce plant operating costs. The cane receivals project includes the cane receivals station, rearrangement and modernisation of the yard handling system, and modernisation of the cane bin fleet. This paper discusses stage I of the project, the cane receivals station, which involved a complete reconstruction of the plant from the exit of the full yard to the inlet of the shredder. The reconstruction included the installation of a new feeder carrier, cane conveyor, shredder feeder and control system, relocation and extension of the tippler, spotter and tramp iron magnet, and the conversion of the tippler to a weighbridge/tippler.
