Qunaba cane transfer
By Maclean, GD
Rationalisation of the Bundaberg district's sugar cane milling capacity resulted in the closure of Qunaba mill at the end of the 1985 crushing season. Cane lands previously assigned to Qunaba mill were rezoned to other district mills. Gin Gin mill closed at the end of the 1974 crushing season, so the Bundaberg district had been exposed previously to mill rationalisation and cane transfer. While the Gin Gin cane transfer involved a significant extension to Bingera mill's tramway system, the Qunaba cane transfer incorporated road haulage and a cross-river ferry, as well as some additional tramways. The ferry was a very important link in the tramway/road transport system which moved a significant quantity of cane harvested in the Qunaba area to Fairymead mill for crushing.
