Central Laboratory analyses a large volume of sugar samples for quality control in the sugar industry. Many of the analytical processes have been automated, as has the data processing operation. However, the data capture process has been a manually intensive operation, with data being transcribed from instruments to worksheets and then keyed into a computer. Direct capture of data from instruments to a computer in the ashes and waters laboratory has operated successfully during the 1986 season. The system is now being extended to colours, polarisation and filterability. Emphasis has been placed on a 'user friendly' interface to the analyst which can be operated with only a few minutes of instruction. The screen prompts provided with auto data capture make training of new analysts easier and faster.
