Comparison of extractives from milling and diffusion

By

There has been much controversy that diffusion may extract more undesirable impurities for a given sucrose extraction and so result in higher losses as molasses. This paper examines the quality of the extractives obtained from the diffusers at both Inkerman and Fairymead over the years 1977-1978 and 1983-1985. A comparison of the extractives from the milling train and diffuser was also made at both factories and the use of lime addition to diffusers was evaluated. Because of the broad scope of this paper, only minimal details have been given of the sampling, preservation and analyses of milling and diffusion juices. Likewise, only the main results are reported in detail.
