Impact wear on ceramic surfaces

By

Modern ceramics have a degree of fracture toughness which allows their use in many severe wear situations such as abrasion and adhesion. They also have very high corrosive resistance, so the potential for replacement of metal is attractive. However, every application requires extensive trials, since the low fracture resistance of ceramics is easily exceeded. Work done at Queensland Institute of Technology details one such experience.
