Origin and improvement of the genetic base of sugarcane

By

The genetic variability of the breeding population used to produce new varieties of a crop is termed its genetic base. It sets the limit of improvement of that crop through breeding. This paper reviews the origin and nature of the existing genetic base of sugarcane; evidence that this genetic base may need to be widened to enable continued improvement; experience with attempts to improve the genetic base; and possible procedures to improve progress.
