The benefits of continuous seven-day crushing operations practised in Fiji mils are compared to projected operations with one day and two-day weekend stoppages. Non-continuous operation would extend season lengths by six and thirteen weeks, with consequential loss in seasonal c.c.s. of 0.53 and 0.88 units respectively. In those countries where weekend stoppages are practised, an increase in factory capacity of between 15 and 27 percent could be realised by changing to continuous crushing without any capital expenditure. Considerable fuel economy results from continuous operation, which is important in Fiji's relatively low fibre situation. Other related aspects are also briefly discussed. Overall, in the Fiji context with its fairly limited factory capacities, non-continuous crushing would render operations uneconomic.
