A model to assess haulout requirements

By

The harvesting and cane haulage components of the sugar industry have been targeted by a number of people as an area where considerable savings could be made. In 1986, a Sugar Industry Harvesting Liaison Committee (Churchward, 1987) was established to determine how these perceived economies might be achieved. Ferguson and Wise (1987) describe a computer model developed to assist this committee in their endeavors and which allowed cane growers and harvester operators to assess their operations. The model described in this paper is an extension of this original model. This paper concentrates on the haulout configuration and hows how a poorly chosen configuration can add significantly to the cost of harvesting.
