Progress in development of a sugarcane meristem transformation system and production of SCMV-resistant transgenics
By Smith, GR; Gambley, RL
Sugarcane meristematic tissue appears to be a viable and useful target for genetic engineering of sugarcane by microprojectile bombardment. Results to date suggest that the transformation frequency is considerably higher for meristematic tissue compared to callus, but the initial regenerated tissues appear to be chimeric. The synthetic resistance gene, SCMVCP, has been detected in regenerated plantlets by PCR, but expression of the gene has not yet been confirmed.
