An automatic mill tail bar lubricator

By

In the past, mill tail bars and their couplings could only be lubricated when sugar mills were stopped for maintenance. With the advent of continuous crushing this would mean that the time interval between the tail bars being lubricated would more than double. All of this extra running time without any lubrication would compound the wear problems that already existed. Also towards the end of a 5-day crushing week, when the couplings become very dry, the end thrust loading on the bearings of the top roller shaft and the final drive of the mill gearing increases dramatically, especially if there is a slight misalignment. These factors provided the incentive that led to the development of the Automatic Tail Bar Lubricator described in this paper.
