A thermal survey of a bagasse-fired boiler

A computational model of pulverised coal firing in a boiler was modified to accommodate very wet fibrous particles such as bagasse. The model was run to simulate the No. 2 boiler at Pleystowe mill at steady state conditions under full load. The outputs for temperature, oxygen concentration and radiant heat flux were in good general agreement with measurements made on the unit during the 1992 crushing season. The model was then run to examine the effect of changes to the bagasse feeding and secondary air injection patterns. More uniform combustion and higher heat outputs are possible.
