Filter station performance tuning

By

In sugar factories, crushing rates normally have to increase before extra filtering area is purchased and this paper is an attempt to highlight areas in a filter station which can be fine-tuned to increase performance. Investigations on rotary vacuum filter performance at North Eton showed that diluting filter feed could reduce pol loss. The procedure of dilution of filter feed with water progressed to using filtrate to reduce the loading of the evaporators. Filtrate recycling was found to halve pol loss. Considerable experience was gained on the conditions required to set up a filter station to handle dilute filter feeds. Using this experience, Racecourse Mill staff were able to reduce pol loss from 0.46 in 1990 to a pol loss of 0.17 in 1992. This paper describes the changes made.
