Progress in the detection and eradication of sugarcane bacilliform virus in Australia
By Braithwaite, KS; Egeskov, NM; Hardy, VG; Gordon, D; Teakle, DS; Smith, GR
Sugarcane bacilliform badnavirus (SCBV), a recently recognised pathogen of sugarcane, appears to be extensively distributed in hybrid canes and basic germplasm. A PCR-based test has been developed that is more sensitive than the previous immune electron microscopy test. The widespread distribution of SCBV around the world, the observed isolate variation, and the high level of infection in hybrid canes are serious concerns for the continued importation of foreign germplasm into Australia via the BSES quarantine system. Methods to eradicate SCBV from sugarcane germplasm are being researched.
