As part of an ongoing effort to reduce water usage at Mulgrave Mill, performance assessment of the factory condensers was carried out, using data logger technology in conjunction with computer aided analysis of data. The three plate and tray condensers were the best performers, probably because the design is less susceptible to the effects of noncondensable gas. Other findings indicate that calandrias are best vented into the head space of the vessel instead of the condenser, and that there may have to be a re-examination of the function of the centre well in light of its apparent importance in the transfer of non-condensables into the head box area. The use of data loggers and computer analysis proved effective.
