Optimum performance through CFD modelling of clarifier designs
By Steindl, RJ
The concept of computational fluid dynamics modelling is introduced and
potential applications within the sugar industry are identified. The availability of the
computational fluid dynamics package FIDAP has enabled an analysis of the flows
occurring in a SRI clarifier to be undertaken. The results of a number of simulations
indicate the predicted flows are in general agreement with those that have been
observed in factory installations. A number of design aspects have been identified
that could improve clarification efficiency and performance.
Of the options discussed, the modification offering the greatest potential for
improved clarification performance is to increase the juice flow to the inner take-off
launder. The modification is easily implemented and the benefits predicted by the
modelling are significant. The benefits include improved conditions for mud separation
and settling, and a reduced mud loading towards the outer regions of the clarifier
floor.
