Stress and durability modelling of sugar mill rolls

By

The paper reviews the literature on design of roller shells and shafts and reports on a three dimensional finite element model of the composite system. Stresses are predicted around the fillet region and for the first time the stress concentration at the edge of the shell landing is reported for a roller under combined loading. The finite element results are used in durability modelling of the roller shaft. Observations are made on the effect of surface finish and mechanical treatment on life to crack initiation.
