The BSES extension program for sodic soils in the Burdekin

By

This paper explains the extension and research program undertaken by Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations (BSES) staff in the Burdekin to ensure sustainable development and productivity on sodic soils. Research work has shown that different irrigation methods will not increase production on sodic soils but the application of gypsum gives significant yield improvement. the associated extension campaign concentrated on careful farm planning and demonstrating the benefits from applied gypsum. It is estimated that the BSES program on sodic soils has resulted in an extra 26,000 tonnes of cane valued at $1.34 million to the Burdekin District in 1994.
