The effect of furrow-compaction on germination and yield of sugarcane planted under wet soil conditions

By

Three trials were established to study the effect of different furrow-compaction practices on germination and cane yield under wet planting conditions. Shoot emergence was reduced when the planting furrow was compacted. Comparison between compaction methods showed that better germination was obtained from low- pressure compaction with a tractor-mounted presswheel than high-pressure compaction with tractor wheels. This translated into a slight non-significant yield response for the three varieties tested. These results cast doubt on the reason for the accepted industry practice of high-pressure furrow-compaction under wet soil conditions. Further work is recommended on the need for furrow-compaction under low soil moisture conditions.
