A preliminary investigation into the mechanics of tramp iron impacting on tungsten shredder hammer tips

A numerical investigation was made into the behaviour of tungsten carbide shredder hammer tips on impact with tramp iron. Residual stress levels are predicted due to thermal shrinkages associated with manufacturing. Both analytical and finite element analyses are used to shed some light on the stress wave phenomena occurring on impact. Fracture mechanics is also used to relate the critical inclusion length to stress level.
