The severity of Pachymetra root rot in Queensland canefields

By

A survey of canefields in several canegrowing districts was undertaken to assess the severity of Pachymetra root rot. Fields growing major varieties in each district, and representing major soil types were selected. Spore counts showed that Pachymetra severity varied considerably along the Queensland coastline. Low levels were recorded in Mossman, Proserpine, Pleystowe, Farleigh, and Millaquin-Qunaba mill areas, with the highest levels in Fairymead and Victoria areas. Enhanced varietal resistance in commercial clones may be needed in some parts of the Bundaberg district to reduce disease levels. Control of the disease through resistant varieties is illustrated by low-moderate levels of the disease in the previously badly affected Mourilyan mill area.
