Numerical modelling of the comminution of sugar cane billets

A review of theoretical and experimental investigations into the comminution of sugar cane billets was undertaken. The structure of a sugar cane billet was examined and a constitutive model characterising its behaviour under impact loadings is proposed. A numerical model describing the comminution of the billet was developed and solved using the finite element method. Results provide good qualitative and quantitative agreement with experimental findings and factory observations.
