Re-evaluation of the basis for fertiliser recommendations in the Australian sugar industry

Opportunities for better nutrient supply and usage are currently being investigated within the research program of the Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Sugar Production. Existing nutritional norms are therefore under review, particularly in view of changed circumstances and needs within the Australian sugar industry. The basis for the current system has been examined in terms of an historical perspective and a critical evaluation of 'how we got to where we are'. This paper summarises these findings, and reports on the re-evaluation of data from a large number of nutritional trials conducted throughout the sugar belt over many years. Future research topics are identified and the need to repackage aspects of current nutrition advice is highlighted.
