A simple and efficient method of rating sugarcane clones for resistance to pachymetra root rot
By Croft, BJ; Bull, JI; Greet, AD
Pachymetra root rot is a serious disease which affects yield in most districts of the Australian sugar industry. The current routine method of screening clones for resistance to Pachymetra root rot is labour intensive and requires large amounts of glasshouse space. This restricts the number of clones that can be screened each year. A new method of visually estimating the extent of rotting of the roots on the outside surface of the root mass was compared to the quantitative measurement of per cent rotted roots currently used to rate clones. There were highly significant correlations between thc two methods in two standard pot experiments containing 119 and 104 clones (r = 0.88 and 0.83, Prob.
