With an increasing awareness of the environment around the world, statutory limits for air pollutants are reducing. For Queensland and New South Wales, the proposed limit for NOx is a peak hourly-averaged ground level concentration of 320 æg/m3, not to be exceeded more than once in a month. NOx emissions for the boilers of sugar factories have been measured. Considering the worst-case scenario, the dispersion modelling package AUSPLUME was used to determine the ground level concentrations which result from these emission levels for three factories. The ground level concentrations for all factories were well below the set limits. This paper discusses potential increases in NOx levels with changes in boiler operation and fuel quality. The results show that NOx produced by bagasse-fired boilers is not a concern to the Australian sugar industry for the proposed statutory limit.
