The code of practice for sustainable cane growing in Queensland - its development and future directions

By

Recently, Australians began to understand better how land management practices interact with the natural environment. Research and experience have helped to improve farming practice. Environmental management and farming practice are tightly intertwined, yet the 'environment' remains somewhat of a mystery to many people. Education and participation are critical tools for achieving sustainable land management. The Code of Practice for Sustainable Cane Growing in Queensland has been developed by the industry to provide cane growers with means to understand their obligations under the Environmental Protection Act 1994. It is also a framework for practical advice on how to minimise impacts on the environment when growing cane. This framework is supported with further details in issue-specific manuals or from extension advisers. This code is not a final product; it is a critical step in an ongoing process. Research recommendations that improve understanding of sustainable farming systems will be incorporated into the code. The development and application of the code and opportunities for greater interaction between the industry and regulatory bodies are discussed.
