Queensland sugar mills use caustic soda for pH control of wet scrubber systems. The high cost of caustic soda and the resultant high sodium content of the ash was the driving force to search for a better alternative. In the past, several Australian mills have tried using lime to control the boiler sluice pH but this has proven unsuccessful. However, South African mills are successfully using lime, so it was decided to re-evaluate its use at Racecourse mill. This paper describes the initial trials using lime, the problems encountered with lime usage and the successful implementation of a pH control system using lime.
