DEVELOPING A PROCESS INFORMATION SYSTEM AT FARLEIGH MILL
By KELLY, D; POZZETTI, C
The production focus within any economic climate must be to reduce cost and increase incomes. The income from sugar can be increased if high quality sugar that qualifies as a premium on the world market is produced. This paper describes how Internet technologies in the form of a simple Intranet can be used to assist in the production of premium grade sugar. It identifies that a key component of a quality control system is the ability to provide relevant information in real time to production personnel on the factory floor. It illustrates how a simple Intranet can be built using off-the-shelf components and highlights that the system can be constructed without recourse to programming. The specific focus of this paper is the development of an information system that provides a target sugar pol to the high-grade fugal operator. This target pol figure would take into account the four-hour sugar sample period in use at Farleigh, the Farleigh laboratory analysis of that sample and the current position in the nominal 2000 t QSL sample.
