BIOMASS POWER-HOW MITR PHOL SUGAR AND ALSTOM MADE IT HAPPEN
By GRAHAM LOWRY, GEORGE GAMBLE, ANDREW RIGGS, SIRISAK TATONG
MITR PHOL SUGAR, Thailand’s leading sugar producer, is currently installing two 40
MW biomass-fired cogeneration plants at their Dan Chang and Phu Khieo mills in
central Thailand. The plants, supplied under turnkey contracts by ALSTOM, are
designed to optimise the needs of producing process steam to the mill during the sugar
season and to generate onto the grid throughout the year. There are many pportunities
for biomass-fired generation in Australia and Asia, but too few have been realised. This
paper looks at some of the critical success factors of the project and how plant design is
turned into economic value.
