CAN ROBOTS WITH VISION SYSTEMS BE USED TO UNCOUPLE CANE BINS?
By E. CHILDS
THE UNCOUPLING and recoupling of the link and pin cane bin couplings is one
of the most repetitive and labour intensive operational tasks undertaken at
Proserpine Mill and, indeed, in most sugar mills in the Australian industry. It is
not possible using the conventional automation systems available in sugar
factories to improve on the conventional method. In an attempt to automate this
process, the use of robot technology has been trialled. A robot with a gripper
device and a latch operator has been developed for the cane bin uncoupling
operation. Tests on the operation of the robot have been conducted with positive
results. To accommodate the robotic operation, the couplings need minor design
changes and a higher level of maintenance. The robot is planned for installation
for the 2006 crushing season.
