INTEGRATED PRACTICES FOR AN IMPROVED SUSTAINABLE, SUB-TROPICAL SUGARCANE INDUSTRY: A CASE STUDY
By ROBERT G. QUIRK AND TIMOTHY G. ZWEMER
RESEARCH necessary to minimise the effects of farming on acid sulfate soils
(ASS) and thereby allow the continuation of sugarcane farming on these soils in
NSW laid the ground work for further investigation of some of the observed
phenomena. Having implemented practices associated with the ASS work on the
McLeod's Creek site, further research has been conducted on soil health. The
result has been the adoption of several innovative, integrated practices that have
measurably increased production and reduced costs. This paper identifies and
discusses these activities as well as some areas of continuing investigation.
