AN ANALYSIS OF THE DERAILMENT OF A LARGE BOGIE LOCOMOTIVE
By W. McWHINNEY, R. TRELOAR and B. HANSEN
FOLLOWING a derailment incident, the mechanics of the wheel/rail forces at the
derailment site together with a review of the distribution of mass moments of the
locomotive's principal components with respect to track stability are presented.
The track performance history of this class of locomotive is also reviewed
together with a quasi-static analysis of the likely derailment factors.
